Brentwood New York

Brentwood is a hamlet in the Town of Islip, Suffolk County, New York. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 60,664. Originally named Thompson Station and Suffolk Station in 1844, Brentwood became a utopian community called Modern Times in 1851, founded by Josiah Warren and Stephen Pearl Andrews. The community was based on principles of individual sovereignty and responsibility, with private property, a local currency based on labor exchange, and no system of authority. The colony dissolved due to external factors, including the Civil War and differing philosophies of new residents. Today, only a few buildings, including two Octagon houses and the original schoolhouse, remain from the era.
